This week on DANCE BEHIND THE SCREEN PODCAST…

[0:28] YeaJean introduces Su Wen-Chi

QUESTIONS WITH SU WEN-CHI

[4:52] YeaJean asks: “How can you define new media art?”

[9:47] YeaJean asks: “Could you share how people’s perspectives have been shifted?”

[15:01] YeaJean asks: “You mentioned at the workshop The work of art in the age of mechanical reproduction by Walter Benjamin and the book Understanding Media by Marshall McLuhan. You shared those two philosophers helped you to understand how electricity has changed our view of time and body senses. Can you introduce those two books to our audience and how they helped you understand the media mechanism better?”

[27:05] YeaJean asks: “We don’t understand how the creator makes the social media platforms. Maybe we can analyze that?”

[32:37] YeaJean asks: “You also shared the choreographers who worked with dance and technology; Wayne McGregor, William Forsythe, and Merce Cuningham and questioned Who is dancing? I think you can get rid of movement habit by using software, but what is different from what a real choreographer gives us?”

[42:57] YeaJean asks: “You have created many works such as WAVE, Anthropic Shadow, Infinity Minus One, Off the Map among others. How is the body in a dance work that only moves with a body itself is different from the body in a new media art performance?”

[47:15] YeaJean asks: “Have you have experience where dance or dancers’ bodies are used as a sub material. How do you see this phenomenal in your art making process and how could we overcome this?”

[50:46] YeaJean asks:

1- If you had to recommend a resource to our audience what would it be?

2- What was the first dance you saw?

  • “My mom dance with Jane Fonda… TV Class”

3- Do you think social media has a positive influence on the dance world (yes or no)?

  • “Tool is a tool & platform is a platform...it’s how you use it”

4- What is your favorite social media platform?

  • YouTube”
