Actionable Takeaways with Practical Tips

  • Start with clarity"The first thing that is important for any entrepreneur — and I consider arts organizations entrepreneurial — is to get clarity on who you are and how you're different than everybody else."

    • Tip: Before writing your vision or mission, define your unique value proposition by asking:

      • What do your audiences need?

      • What are you uniquely gifted at?

      • Where do those overlap?

  • Think like an entrepreneur"Artists and arts organizations are entrepreneurial... and they're always pushing the envelope around the social issues that we need to be tackling."

    • Tip: Treat your practice like a business. Ask yourself — what makes me stand out in the marketplace, and how do I communicate that clearly?

  • DIY your tools"I believe in DIY tools, as I think all of this is stuff that people should be able to do on their own."

    • Tip: Don’t wait for a consultant — start with small steps like writing down your goals, mapping your audiences, or drafting your value proposition on paper.

  • Vision as a rallying cry"The reason why a vision is so important is because that's your rallying cry."

    • Tip: Write your vision statement as if you were inviting someone to join a movement, not just support a project.

  • Use art to push society forward"Whether it's the environment or social justice, the arts have always been one of the things that has pushed society and culture forward."

    • Tip: Connect your creative work to bigger conversations to amplify its impact.
